You can prune a lot of these things in the coming weeks. Wait until the lilac blooms in a few weeks then prune it. Don't prune it too hard - it prefers to be left alone so just shape it right after the bloom. You can prune your privet, ligustrom, now and when it breaks dormancy, it will flush out new growth. Verbena? Maybe Viburnum? Tell me a little bit more about the plant so I know what type it is. There are lots of Viburnums, most bloom Spring to early Summer and can be pruned after they bloom. Wiegela can be pruned if it needs to be after the spring bloom but it forms a nice habit on its own so don't shear it too much unless it has outgrown its home. Good luck!

THANK YOU! I have Hellebores in my garden and never knew about pruning the leaves. Hobey came in after cleaning out the fireplace this afternoon & told me proudly he spread the ashes around our Hydrangeas. Our question - when should we prune our Privet (semi-hedge), Rose of Sharon, Lilac, Widgea, and tall Verbena (small tree size)? I always thought it was after flowering, is this wrong? The Rose of Sharon looks like I forgot to get to it last year (dried pods).
